Husky sledding in Levi: drive or ride, 5 or 7 kilometres?

Updated October 28, 2026 · 6 min read

A husky team pulling a wooden sled along a snowy forest trail in Levi

The advertised distance is only one part of a husky safari in Levi. A five-kilometre ride can fill a two-hour programme; a seven-kilometre self-drive outing is listed for three hours. Neither means that you spend every minute moving. Briefing, transfers, meeting the dogs and changing drivers all sit around the sled section.

Five kilometres: a substantial first ride

The 5 km Husky Sledding Ride in Levi is listed for two hours. Its route runs through snowy forest and beside lakes with Alaskan and Siberian huskies. It is the sensible middle choice when you want more than a short taster without turning the activity into most of a day.

Do not infer your role from the distance. The title describes the ride, but the current booking page must tell you whether guests drive, sit as passengers or swap positions. Check that wording for your departure, together with the meeting point and transfers. A traveller who specifically wants to handle the sled should not book on the strength of a generic photograph.

Seven kilometres: driving is the point

The 7 km Self-Drive Husky Sledding Adventure explicitly says that you drive your own team and may change drivers on the way. It is listed for three hours. The extra kilometre count matters less than the responsibility: standing behind a working dog team, braking and following instructions is more physical than sitting in the sled.

This is the stronger choice for two capable adults who both want a turn. Ask how the swap works if one person does not want to drive. Also check the operator’s participation restrictions; do not assume that a child, a pregnant traveller or someone with limited mobility can take either position merely because the sled has space.

Riding versus driving

As a driver you stand, balance in bends, use the brake and respond to the guide. As a passenger you sit closer to the snow and wind, but you can watch the forest rather than manage the team. Neither role is universally better. Driving creates the stronger sense of participation; riding is calmer and may be the only sensible role for part of a mixed group.

Cold feels different in each position. The passenger is less active, while the driver is exposed and working. Confirm whether thermal overalls, boots and gloves are included, then still bring warm base layers. The dogs set the pace; this is not a kart race with a guest-controlled accelerator.

Questions worth asking before payment

Check the sled distance rather than the entire programme length, who drives, whether drivers swap, how many people share a sled, what winter equipment is provided and whether transfers are included. Read the operator’s current age and mobility conditions on the booking page instead of relying on a general rule.

For most first-time visitors, five kilometres is enough to feel like a real forest ride and leaves more energy for another activity. Seven kilometres is worth the longer programme when self-driving is the reason you are booking. Compare these with the wider range of husky tours in Levi, where the shortest and cheapest listing is not automatically the best match.
