Forest ice skating or horse riding in the snow near Levi?

Skater following a lit natural-ice trail between snow-covered trees near Levi

Forest ice skating and horse riding offer two unusually quiet ways to experience the snow around Levi. Neither uses an engine, both work for beginners with the right operator, and both place you in the forest rather than on a busy slope. The physical experience is very different, though: skating asks you to balance and move continuously, while riding asks you to stay warm and follow the horse and guide.

What the Lovimainas skating trip involves

The Lovimainas Forest Ice Skating and Forest Walk is listed as a two-hour experience with transfer from Levi. Skates, protective equipment, hot drinks and a traditional shelter are included in the operator’s current description. A kicksled is offered as an alternative for someone who cannot skate.

Check the route length shown at checkout. The GetYourGuide title currently refers to skating for up to 2.5 kilometres and a one-kilometre walk, while Lovimainas’ current direct page describes a one-kilometre natural-ice trail. This may reflect different products or a changed route, but the booking confirmation is the only version that applies to your departure.

Natural ice is not an indoor rink. Its surface can be rougher, grip changes with temperature and the forest route may not be open in marginal weather. The operator states that extreme cold of −30°C or below may lead to rescheduling or a refund. That is a condition rule, not a forecast for your day.

What a winter horse ride feels like

Levi’s official destination information says guided horse treks run throughout the year and can take beginners. Local stables use Finnish or Icelandic horses accustomed to northern conditions. This does not make the activity automatic: the guide still matches horse and rider, explains control and decides the route according to the group and weather.

Winter riding is less aerobic than skating, so toes and fingers can cool quickly. Ask the stable whether boots, helmet or a warm outer layer are supplied and what weight, age or mobility conditions apply. The operator’s own participation rules matter; do not transfer a rule from one stable to another.

Horse riding gives you a higher viewpoint and interaction with an animal. It is usually the better choice for someone who likes animals but dislikes sliding. It is the worse choice for anyone uneasy around horses, with an allergy, or unable to sit comfortably for the stated duration. A horse-drawn sleigh is a separate, more passive option and should not be confused with riding.

Which is easier for a beginner?

Skating is easier to understand but demands more independent balance. A complete beginner may spend part of the session learning to stop and turn. The kicksled alternative makes the Lovimainas visit more inclusive for a mixed-ability group, although the operator says the experience is not suitable for wheelchair users.

On a guided horse trek, a beginner does not need previous riding experience according to Visit Levi and the listed local stable, but must follow instructions and remain comfortable on the horse. Ask whether the departure is exclusively for beginners or mixes experience levels.

Clothing, timing and the aurora

For either activity, use warm base layers, mittens and socks that leave room inside the boot. Tight footwear makes cold feet worse. Skaters generate more heat and should be able to open a layer; riders need stronger insulation while moving slowly.

Later skating or riding times may take place under dark skies, but neither is an aurora guarantee. Choose the time for the atmosphere and your tolerance of cold. If the northern lights are the priority, a flexible aurora outing is a more logical product.

Pick forest skating for active movement, independent pace and a novel trail. Pick riding for animal contact, guided rhythm and a view from the saddle. Confirm transfer, equipment, exact route or riding duration and weather policy before paying; those details decide more than the headline activity.
